The summer after sophomore year Snavely, on his way to the Freedom Summer in Mississippi, stops in in Alum Falls for a few days. He meets and falls for Sharon Woods, then decides to hang around Columbus instead of going south. But he's almost broke and now he's gotta find a job. In Jay's bar Snavely and Eck (who's also jobless) are told by Elmer, the old one-legged carpenter, that his employer, Linden Lumber Company, needs another man in the truss department.
