We followed Remy and Francoise to their home in Granville, about an hour south on the French coast (stopping a couple of times for Tim to hassle with the windshield wiper).

They gave us a tour of Granville, a beautiful port town, and Francoise served a delicious salmon dinner. We saw Remy's collection of 9th Air Force memorabilia and he gave me the addresses of couple of pilots that I didn't have. He presented me with some 1968 Calvados, Normandy's pride, in a ceramic bottle signed by the producer. The cat escaped when Tim stepped out for a smoke but returned after a short while, to everyone's relief (especially Tim's).

Francoise and friend

We were almost flooded out during the drive back to Bayeux. It poured so hard we couldn't see. The broken wiper was making a very loud, screeching noise as it dragged across the glass. Tim's shoulders were up around his ears. We got lost in one small town where water gushed a foot high out of the sewers. But we got found again and made it back to the B&B by midnight. Good man, Tim!

We had time for a few museums Monday morning before getting the ferry back to England. Tuesday Linda and I were on our way home. Since then I've sent a copy of Laughter and Tears to the mayor of Villers-Bocage. Remy tells me that the town council would like me to return next year for a dedication ceremony to install the plaque in my father's honor.

In Memoriam
Francoise Chuinard
I regret to announce the death of our friend, Francoise Chuinard, on August 27, 1998. Her illness came on very suddenly. Our sympathy and love go out to Remy and his family in his great loss. We are thankful that we had a chance to know this good woman a little bit. Her picture will remain on this site as a small memorial.
