Those Non-union Aircraft

Bob McKee:
The German "Buzz Bomb" was an attention-getter. You could hear its pulsating engine noise (a jet noise unheard of in those days) as it approached. You wished that the noise would not stop just before reaching your position on the ground - that meant it was out of fuel and about to crash and explode in 4-5 seconds. They flew about 400 mph at 500-600 feet and carried about 1000 pounds of explosive. Our airfield at Headcorn was directly under the Buzz Bombsā route to London, so we saw, heard, and dodged them every night.
